Vivitrol Treatment

Vivitrol treatment is a new treatment protocol approved in 2006 for those suffering from alcoholism as well as addiction to opiates. Its primary use is for the treatment of alcoholism. It is the same drug as Naltrexone, and instead of being administered as a daily pill, as in the case of Naltrexone, it is administered through an injection once a month. What is Vivitrol Treatment?

Vivitrol treatment is mainly used to treat alcohol dependence, but is also used to treat people with an addiction to opiates. Vivitrol is administered via an injection and is administered once per month, versus Naltrexone, which is taken orally daily. Prior to being administered, the person receiving Vivitrol treatment must have been alcohol or narcotic free for at least 10 days. Because it is a powerful opioids receptor antagonist, meaning it reduces the cravings for opioids as well as alcohol, Vivitrol treatment can have some serious side effects. Some of these side effects include feeling light-headed or even fainting, mood changes including hallucinations, difficulty breathing, a fast heart beat, general weakness or muscle and joint pain.

By combining Vivitrol with traditional 12-step programs, Vivitrol treatment is effective by helping addicts reduce their cravings for alcohol. Vivitrol treatment by itself is not a “cure” for alcohol and opiate addiction, but it is an effective tool used during the alcohol rehab process.
